2011 in review

So, over the past year, I've read 75 books (not counting manga), watched 44 movies and 27 shows/seasons of shows (not counting anime), and played at least bits of 27 games.

For books, I think my favorite nonfiction was The Making of the English Working Class by E. P. Thompson (though OMG it was so long), and my favorite fiction was Dictionary of the Khazars by Milorad Pavic. My favorite documentary was The Interrupters (though There Once Was an Island is a close second), and my favorite movie was Winter's Bone. My favorite TV show... well my favorite in terms of enjoyment was definitely You're Beautiful, but as for what I thought was the best, it's a tie between Joseon X-Files and Luther. My favorite game was Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana. It's harder to do anime/manga, since AFAICT MAL doesn't give you nice yearlong summaries, but my favorite anime was probably Natsume Yuujinchou (all three seasons, I guess, since I mainlined them) and my favorite manga was Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth Gin no Saji, (though it would probably be Vinland Saga if we got more than 20 pages every other month).

I wrote 4 fics this year: The Makka (AtLA, Katara and Aang), Penguin Cafe (Mawaru Penguindrum, Shouma and Ringo), Unshackled (ArchAndroid, OFC and Cindi Mayweather), and little we know of it (Revenge, Emily/Nolan). I'd still like to spin the AtLA fic out into a longer series, but I don't know if I'll get around to it or not. And I've been thinking about writing one about the Fairy Tail characters as kids... we'll see.

I wrote a Nanowrimo novel as well: Opener of Ways. It's... well, it's definitely a first draft! I am working on revising it, though.

And that's about it, I guess. I never really have too much to say here, but I do want to try to post more than I have been.

Kaleidoscope recs

I think I might have won Kaleidoscope this year. No, seriously. I got two really amazing fics, and I love them both unconditionally.

Fifty Years in the Virtuous City is based on the short story Sultana's Dream, about a utopia where women become the rulers, and of course set everything to rights :) I was especially interested in the two Lady Principals of the country's two great universities, and I basically got the perfect fic for them that was more than I ever imagined. I think I left a more articulate comment on the story itself, but omg the worldbuilding, and the two women and their decades-long relationship, and the building of the country, and the science!! Basically everything about it was perfect and you all need to read it.

And I got a treat, too! This was for The Interview for the webseries The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, and I don't know who the author is, but she got J's voice (and awkwardness) so pitch-perfect! I love how you can see foreshadowing of all the ridiculous events coming down the line, and the ending is golden. This fic really feels like an extension of the series to me, and I loved it a lot.

There were a lot of other really great stories posted, so more recs under the cut! Consider this very non-exhaustive; I haven't managed to read everything yet.

Static Shock, No. 6, You're Beautiful, Di Renjie, Kimi ni Todoke, Capital Scandal, Natsume Yuujinchou, Ha-He, Madoka Magica, ArchAndroid )

Title: Penguin Cafe
Rating: PG
Fandom: Mawaru Penguindrum
Characters/Pairings: Ringo and Shouma; maybe Ringo/Shouma a bit.
Summary: Today I ate with Tabuki at the Penguin Cafe. I broke my shoe on the way back, and he helped me all the way home. How nice!
Etc: ~1350 words, spoilers up to Episode 7, no warnings

'Is that seriously what you're wearing?' Ringo asked him. )

White Lotus

Okay, so before I forget, again, I want to mention a fic I wrote recently for the [community profile] white_lotus challenge. It's called The Makka, and it's an AtLA fic about Katara and Aang fighting monsters at the South Pole! I'm going to hold off on uploading it to archives, because I want to write a set of stories about their trip: Katara finding new Waterbenders, Aang solving problems, and both of them being awesome.

I received fanart for this fest: Next Generation, which shows Kanna teaching Katara how to take care of Tenzin. The Water Tribe is my favorite, and I'd asked for something about the ladies in it; I'm really happy with the art I got and the strong family bonds it shows.

Anyway, there was a lot of great fic, art, vids, and crafts in this fest, so if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to check them all out!

I hate everything

You know, I'm used to the general misogyny of Snapepologists, and even crap like whitesplaining how POC should feel about things (or how they actually feel, WOC can like Lily's character without projecting onto her), but JFC, can we at least all agree that Emmett Till did not deserve to be murdered for (possibly) wolf whistling at someone? Even if he was "popular and 'acting macho'"?

First of all, I really want to rec my gift this year! Muchacha is a really awesome Machete fic about Sartana and Luz. I think the author did a really great job of characterizing both of them :DDD

More recs under the cut...20th Century Boys, ArchAndroid, Homestuck, Iron Giant, Malcolm in the Middle, The Outsiders, Scott Pilgrim, Skip Beat, Static Shock, Strindberg and Helium, Suikoden III )

Anyway, I'm still reading, but I figured I'd drop these recs off for now :)

First of all, outside the cut, I really want to thank [personal profile] persephone_kore for reading, the fantastic MLs in my region, and everyone who I did word wars with (you know who you are!).

And now under the cut:

I should be finished in about two days! Though annoyingly, there's a discrepancy of about 200 words between the word count of Focuswriter, the word processor I'm using, and the Nanowrimo word count validator >:(
